Our children must be raised to understand the world is more than just a white-centered, settler-positive, Judeo-Christian place. We need to give them the perspective that Canada and Canadians are imperfect, that we’ve made mistakes and have (or need to) make amends for them, and that we continue to progress to become a more inclusive and supportive society of everyone in our country (not just those who are white and well-abled).
Our schools play a crucial role in that. To help teach them to be curious about the world; to understand equity, respect, community, and balance; and to value one another for our differences as much as our similarities. To do any less is a disservice to our children and to everyone who’s struggled to overcome barriers or had their story silenced.
